How does HIV/AIDS affect the body?
A healthy body has CD4 cells which helps the immune system function and as well fight off infections. They act as messengers to the immune system notifying them to fight off germs. When HIV attaches to these CD4 cells, it tries to infect these cells, making them lose their ability to do their jobs. The body then loses the ability to fight infections. AIDS can affect every body system.
Systems Affected-
1. Immune System
HIV destroys CD4 cells, the white blood cells that help the immune system fight off disease.
2. Respiratory System
As HIV develops into AIDS, infections such as pneumocystis pneumonia or PCP can cause severe respiratory conditions.
3. Nervous System
A weakened immune system allows bacteria, viruses, and fungus to infect the nervous system of people with HIV and AIDS. Examples include lymphoma and toxoplasmosis.
4. Gastrointestinal System
Gastrointestinal disorders are among the most common conditions with HIV or AIDS.
5. Skin System
Skin conditions associated with HIV and AIDS include dermatitis, psoriasis and hives.
If the immune has too few CD4 cells, it could causes cancers.
Others illnesses include:
- Rare tumors of the blood vessels in the skin
- Infection in the bone marrow, producing anemia and destroying the immune system
- Infection of the alveoli of the lungs which reduce lung capacity and the effectiveness of the respiratory system
- Infections of the red blood cells which decreases the amount of oxygen in the blood
